THE EXHIBITION
Sacred and Profane: The Dual Faces of Baroque Painting in Rome and Naples focuses on the interplay between religious devotion and profane imagery in Baroque art. Through paintings by leading artists of the period, the exhibition traces connections and dialogues that define the character of Baroque painting in these two iconic Italian cities. It displays works that capture the theatrical imprint, dynamic realism, and emotional depth of the period.
The NAM Collection mainly consists of old master paintings belonging to the Peretti family: three generations of Roman antiquarians, collectors and artists. The collection was started by Arnaldo Peretti (1911-1985) in the 1930s. It was greatly enlarged and its present corpus mainly established by Ferdinando Peretti (1938-2022). Matteo Peretti (b.1975), who is the current director, is actively adding/enlarging the collection. Italian baroque masters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are the key pieces of this collection.
The volume and spatial dimension of the Red Room of the Piano Nobile of the Casino Maltese, where the exhibition is housed, resonate with those of notable residences in Rome and Naples. In a curatorial way, the display evokes the manner in which paintings were traditionally hung, giving the room a visual context that is an integral part of the exhibition’s experience.
Kindly be reminded that the Casino Maltese requires a smart-casual dress code (no sportswear, sport shoes, or shorts)
The exhibition showcases works by Giovanni Baglione, François de Nomé (called Monsù Desiderio), Bernardino Mei, Giovanni Battista Gaulli, Guillaume Courtois (Il Borgognone), Luca Giordano, Giovanni Battista Beinaschi, Giacomo Del Po, Francesco Trevisani, Francesco Solimena, Paolo De Matteis, Sebastiano Conca and Corrado Giaquinto, amongst others.
