Proudly sponsored by this InstituteGaulitana: A Festival of Music announces Puccini’s best-loved opera La Bohème to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death.

Following on last year’s La Traviata boasting a “top-notch cast” greeted by an “enthusiastic audience” (OperaClick), Federica Vitali interprets Mimì as the “truly impressive singing-actress” returning to Gozo to interpret a leading role in another Puccinian gem after her mesmerising Madame Butterfly last October.

The full-scale production shall be directed by Enrico Castiglione, one of the most respected figures of his generation and a mainstay for Gaulitana operas in the last 10 years.

The opera, sung in Italian with English surtitles, will feature the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gaulitanus Choir under the baton of Colin Attard, one of the leading figures of the genre on the islands.

La Bohème is the opera of young people, of inspired youths, full of life – even when it fades – at the heart of the city of lights.

The story is inspired by the novel Scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger, reflecting a lifestyle that was very common a few years earlier in Milan, known as Scapigliatura. This opera’s greatness is due to the speed with which images are created and disappear during the four acts, where love and death swap places with narrative simplicity and spontaneity.
