A whirlwind of activity sweeps us into the daily routine at the Archaeological Museum of Naples. Exhibitions are mounted, restoration projects are underway, as visitors from around the world move spellbound from room to room. The beauty of the museum is caught on film – not only its stunning arrangements of classical artworks, but also the close relationships, otherwise invisible, that form within its walls. Agalma (from the Greek word for statue, image) shows the museum as a living thing, and its works are captured in all their materiality and expressive power.
Director’s notes: In the film the archaeological and cinematic perspectives overlap, lingering lovingly on the physiques of the statues and mapping out visions, points of view and new avenues for interpretation. Agalma is the relationship that is created between the artwork and the beholder, who is observed in the course of a ceaseless visual pilgrimage from one museum space to the next, as the ancient world comes alive, quotidian yet ineffable.

THE DIRECTOR
Doriana Monaco was born in Benevento in 1989. She studied archaeology and art history at the University of Naples Federico II. In 2014, she worked as assistant director on the film Perez by Edoardo De Angelis. She made her first two short films in 2015: Anatomia di un pensiero Sad and Lazyest Girl in Town. In 2016 she joined FILMaP – Atelier di Cinema del Reale at Ponticelli, where she directed the documentary Cronopios, selected for the 2017 Trieste Film Festival’s Corso Salani Award.
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Join Festalingwi – a celebration of European languages and culture for everybody – on Sunday 22 September from 12:00 to 21:30 at the University of Malta – Valletta Campus for a fun and diverse programme.
Every year, Europe celebrates the European Day of Languages, in which we celebrate Europe’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage. We’ll be celebrating it in Malta by gathering for a day around language – be it through taster lessons of a new language, games and quizzes in different languages, theatre shows and a concert, Ħoss il-Malti, featuring Brodu and Sean Borg. We have animated reading sessions for children in different age groups, theatre shows by More or Less Theatre and a musical performance for children by Mariele Zammit, Justin Galea and Ġużè Camilleri.
Among the different European languages we can try out are Spanish, French, German, Ukrainian, Basque, and Maltese sign language. We will also be giving the Maltese language its due, with the programme featuring Kwiżżikk, a quiz on Maltese expressions, a workshop centred around the book Mela!, and the annual Żanżan Kelma spelling bee final.

The European Day of Languages is a yearly celebration of linguistic diversity and cultural heritage across Europe. It is celebrated annually on the 26 September and aims to promote language learning, cultural exchange, and intercultural understanding among people of all ages and backgrounds. Established by the Council of Europe and the European Commission, this event encourages individuals to explore and embrace languages beyond their mother tongue.
