L’inchiesta marinara a Malta is part of the project Atlante Linguistico della Sicilia. The project aims to recover the dialectical lexicon of the fundamental and traditional activities of life on the island.
The maritime transcript of the ALS includes 21 geographical points of inquiry that form a network. This network is made up of the Sicilian coast and the islands which surround it, including Malta.
This volume is a report of 600 questions answered by Nazzarenu Cuschieri, a full time fisherman from St Julian’s. The Director of Centro Studi Filologici e Linguistici Siciliani di Palermo, Giovanni Ruffino, the mind behind this Atlante is also participating in the presentation of this volume at the Italian Cultural Institute.
While Professor Ruffino will discuss the Atlante, Elena D’Avenia a PhD student from Universita’ di Palermo who led most of the research in the various Sicilian ports, will speak about her interviews with Mr. Cuschieri. Professor Giuseppe Brincat, who transcribed most of her research, will illustrate D’Avenia’s comparative research on the Sicilian and Maltese Maritime terminology.
