“Giuseppe Donati e Umberto Calosso: Żewġ Anti-Faxxisti Taljani f’Malta”

Official launching of the documentary film to Maltese and Italian authorities

Giuseppe Donati – a Catholic Liberal, editor of Il Popolo and a close-collaborator of Don Luigi Sturzo – and Umberto Calosso – a socialist but also an anarchist and follower of Antonio Gramsci – were two refugees who ended up on Malta in the early 1930s to escape the Fascist regime.

The TV documentary Giuseppe Donati and Umberto Calosso: Żewġ Anti-Faxxisti Taljani f’Malta (Giuseppe Donati and Umberto Calosso: Two Italian Anti-Fascists in Malta) is written and produced by award-winning journalist Mario Xuereb for Television Malta. It is based on the original research by local historian Giorgio Peresso, published in 2015 by Sensiela Kotba Soċjalisti (SKS). The documentary includes previously unseen footage and documents and it required further research in local and foreign archives including at the Istituto Luce in Rome. The story of both Donati and Calosso is illustrated via first-hand accounts and interviews.
