Concert with Gillian Zammit (Soprano) Ramona Zammit Formosa (Harpsichord) Simon Abdilla Joslin (Violoncello)
Music from the XVIII century by Mons. Antonino Reggio. Introduction by Anthony Hart
The music of Antonino Reggio had lain forgotten for some 230 years until its rediscovery in 2000 in a library in Germany. Over the last fifteen years, research has been carried out into both the life and the music of this extremely talented Sicilian priest.
Reggio’s musical works comprise masses, oratorios and sacred songs, secular arias, sonatas for cembalo, sonatas for two violoncelli and sonatas for lute and bass.
The works in this concert, performed for the first time in over 240 years, will include arias for solo soprano, sonatas for keyboard and sonatas for violoncello.
The vocal works will be performed by the soprano Gillian Zammit; the keyboard works and accompaniment by Ramona Zammit Formosa, harpsichord, and the violoncello works and accompaniment by Simon Abdilla Joslin. The recital will be introduced with a brief summary of Reggio’s life and music by the musicologist, Anthony Hart
