Lecture “Mattia Preti: re-descovering one of his works”

In collaboration with the  Istituto Italiano di Cultura Heritage Malta shall present the results of scientific investigations carried out on Mattia Preti’s Martyrdom of St. Catherine of Alexandria undertaken jointly with the Museo Civico di Taverna and Florence’s prestigious Opificio delle Pietre Dure.

The investigations have uncovered the existence of an earlier complete painting, also by Mattia Preti, depicting the Martyrdom of St. Paul that was, at a later stage, transformed into a Martyrdom of St. Catherine. The speakers are Sandro Debono, Heritage Malta’s Senior Curator at the National Museum of Fine Arts, David Frank Bugeja, Conservator at Heritage Malta’s Conservation Division at Bighi and the team of restorers who collaborated on this conservation project.
