Commendatore Pagnozzi’s, a building contractor colluded with the mafia and his young wife Stefania’s lifeless bodies are found in their car in a deep pit. All this leads to think of a normal accident. However some of the details do not fit in the picture. For example, why does the very young and quite attractive woman, second wife of Commendatore Pagnozzi, has broken fingernails? Heir to the fortune of Pagnozzi is the son Giacomo who is lazy, puny and full of hatred for his father. Pagnozzi’s house is sacked the same night of the accident. Montalbano seeks answers, while contemplating whether he should stay alone at home during the night of the 31st December or comfort himself by eating the rice croquettes prepared for him by Adelina.
