Within the Magic Box
It’s the first Magic Box of 2016 at the Italian Cultural Institute. Our exciting new programme starts with “Carnevale in Italia”, one of those festivals everybody loves. According to ancient Italian tradition masks and disguise characterize Carnival. In fact, many Italian regions and cities are represented by specific characters and masks. The characters Arlecchino, Pulcinella, Colombina, Dottor Balanzone, Pantalone and many others, often go back to Renaissance and Commedia dell’Arte, when they first appeared in theatres.
This month we give a warm welcome to Valeria Sarsi who will tell us about the origins of Carnival and will also show us some short videos of the most well-known Italian Carnivals, such as Venezia in Veneto, Viareggio in Tuscany, Asti and Ivrea in Piemonte, Putignano in Puglia, Acireale in Sicily, and Mamoiada in Sardinia. We also welcome back Sarah Portelli, who has designed and made for us some beautiful decorations for this special evening.
Come and join us and bring all your questions, there’ll be Carnival cake and a glass of wine for all.
Everyone is welcome and entrance is free.
