Public talk by Dr. Simon Mercieca
During Lent, Christians were supposed to fast and were not allowed to eat meat. This ban was due to either economical, cultural or medical reasons. A fact which is not well known is the Italian monasticism’s influence in the creation of meatless recipes. During this talk, we will be introduced to the meals which nuns and sisters used to cook during Lent. Many of these recipes made of simple ingredients and easily available to farmers, were created in Italy. Simon Mercieca will talk about this special diet and how it was introduced in Malta.
