Carrying lots of memories from the war years, Gemma goes back to Sarajevo with her son Pietro to attend an exhibition, which includes pictures taken by Pietro’s father, in memory of the victims of the war.
Nineteen years before her return to Sarajevo Gemma abandoned the war-torn city with newborn Pietro, leaving behind her husband Diego and the makeshift family made up of Gojko, the impertinent Bosnian poet, the rebellious Muslim girl Aska and the little Sebina, to survive the war.
The intense love and the happiness between Diego and Gemma weren’t enough to overcome Gemma’s inability to give birth. Now the truth awaits for Gemma in Sarajevo. There she will be obliged to face the depth of her loss, the true horrors of war and the redemptive power of love.
