“Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea)”

Within the II edition of Valletta Film Festival (3 – 11 June 2016)

A film by Gianfranco Rosi. Starring Samuele Pucillo, Mattias Cucina, Samuele Caruana, Pietro Bartolo, Giuseppe Fragapane (Italy-France, 2016 – colour, 108’ min. Documentary. Language: Italian – Subtitles: English)

Pietro Bartolo, the main character, has been invited to hold a talk after the screening.

Gianfranco Rosi speaks about Lampedusa through the story of Samuele, a schoolboy who loves to fire stones with a catapult which he built himself and who loves to go bird hunting. Samuele prefers to play on shore even though everything around him concerns the sea and the thousands ofwomen, men and children who, during the last 20 years, have tried to cross over that sea;  people looking for a better life, people who too often died in that sea.

The director stayed in Lampedusa for a whole year and had the possibility of touching with his own hands the rhythm of that microcosm which he really wanted to depict in a very honest way. Rosi never hit below the belt, not even when showing extreme circumstances. His camera recorded life and death acknowledging that, as in the words of Thomas Merton, no man is an island and, today, there’s no island like Lampedusa.

The movie, acclaimed by critics and public, has been awarded The Golden bear at the Berlin International Film Festival 2016
