“Two Opera Tales of Otello”

A seminar exploring Rossini’s and Verdi’s version

Saturday 8 February 2020 | 10:30 - 13:00 | Italian Cultural Institute, Valletta

Free event but booking is required

Opera is undoubtedly the supreme artistic genre because it incorporates all aspects of art; music poetry drama visual arts. In fact it epitomises the muses even today thousands of years after these divine women divided the artistic attributes between them under Apollo’s watchful eye. Opera is on a roll all over Europe with 8% of the German population attending operatic performances on a regular basis. Malta lags behind somewhat however between Gaulitana: A Festival of Music, the two Victoria opera houses and the MANOEL we are keeping the flag flying through thick and thin quoting Kenneth Zammit Tabona, artistic director of Teatru Manoel.

This Spring Opera lovers will have the chance to discover both Gioachino Rossini’s and Giuseppe Verdi’s version of Otello thanks to Teatru Manoel and Gaulitana Festival. Although they both relate to the same protagonist, there are some important differences between the two works. Verdi’s work is based on Shakespeare’s Othello, whereas Rossini’s opera is based on a French adaptation of the story Othello, ou le More de Venise by Jean-François Ducis. Rossini’s opera differs from Shakespeare’s version in that the story happens in Venice not in Cyprus, Iago is less diabolic and the role of Rodrigo is more elaborate. Rossini’s work might be lesser-known than Verdi’s opera, but it was by all means a milestone in the development of opera as musical drama.

This seminar will introduce you to both Operas. The artistic directors Kenneth Zammit Tabona and Colin Attard will touch upon the wider context of the importance of opera on the Maltese Islands. The artistic teams of both Rossini’s and Verdi’s Otello will focus on the works and on the artistic process behind the stagings. It is the best introduction to enjoy in full both productions.

This seminar is supported by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura La Valletta.
