Coeliac disease: the transition from childhood to adulthood

Carolina Ciacci a Professor of gastroenterology from the University of Salerno, Italy, will be in Malta on May 12th and 13th as key note speaker for the third National Coeliac Conference being organised by PR consultancy Narrative Structures in collaboration with the President’s Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute.

Prof Ciacci who is also the chairperson of the Federation of Italian Scientific Societies for Gastrointestinal Diseases will be speaking about ‘coeliac disease and quality of life’ – the psychological imbalance, she claims may affect a person with coeliac disease, with variable degrees of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, eating disorders and fatigue.

Prof Ciacci will deliver two talks: Friday evening she will address medical professionals at the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta and Saturday morning at The Palace in Valletta she will speak to coeliac sufferers and all those who are interested in increasing their knowledge on coeliac disease and gluten sensitivity.

Prof Ciacci will also shed light on gluten sensitivity, referring to those people suffering from coeliac disease-like symptoms but in whom coeliac disease was excluded by both blood test and intestinal biopsy.

She also states that not everyone should be on a gluten free diet because so far there is no scientific evidence to show that the gluten free diet is the best option for all.
