Where and when
Three-month stages are offered at one of the Offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome or one of the Ministry’s Offices abroad:

Italian Institutes of Culture
Italian Embassies and Consulates
Permanent Representations at International Organizations

The stages normally take place during three different periods throughout the year (January-April; May-August; September-December)

Who organizes them
The stages were established by an Agreement between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Istituto Diplomatico) and the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI) which has so far been adhered to by 57 Italian Universities. During the period 2001-2004 the Ministry received almost 10,000 applications and assigned over 3000 stages.

The Programme
This Programme is aimed towards those who wish to come in contact with our Country’s international relations in the political, economical, socio-cultural, scientific and development cooperation fields and offers an opportunity to develop direct and first-hand knowledge of the Ministry’s operations both in Italy and overseas  from a privileged perspective. Therefore, it is strongly recommended for those who wish to gain supplementary knowledge in view of pursuing a career in the international field by studying “in situ” thus complementing and enhancing their academic background.

The Diplomatic Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The Diplomatic Institute (Istituto Diplomatico), in collaboration with CRUI, is in charge of the coordination of the project and the various aspects of its management. In particular, it defines its objectives, conditions and contents, it organises the periodic advertising of the positions offered with the relevant job descriptions, it promotes its wider expansion, it advances the selection of the candidates, it takes care of appropriate initiatives for a profitable and formative stage for the successful applicants at the assigned office, and it carries out a general monitoring of the stages and the results achieved.

On the website of the Conference of Italian University Rectors it is possible to find further information on the procedures and requirements for participation, as well as the list of Universities which take part in the initiative. Those interested must also refer to the relevant offices of the respective universities which gather the applications and are able to provide any further instructions.
