Once upon an Archive: Malta, the Langue of Italy and the Order of St. John

a lecture by Dr. Valeria Vanesio

 poster edited

Among the many research questions wrapping up the history of the Order of St. John, its chancery practices, administrative procedures, and archival history are still unknown or overlooked. Navigating Hospitaller archives, both at central and peripheral level, requires exploring artificial archival collections, facing huge gaps and challenging the traditional understanding of the Hospitaller institutions.

Through one of the connecting bodies between the central and the peripheral institutions, the Langue of Italy, this intervention aims to unravel some of these research knots from an unpublished perspective, the Magistral Archives of the Order in Rome, and to give new light to a sleeping memory, the fragmented archive of the Italian Langue.
