Italian certainly is one of the most studied and loved languages in the world: why so? Well, as you all know, it is the language of music, art, literature, love and… cuisine. There are certain spheres in which Italian and its culture and tradition triumph. Beginners in Italian from all over the world may have almost no Italian, but it is guaranteed they know some words referring to Italian food. Let’s face it, Italian cuisine is one of the best and most creative in the world.
Our guests this month are Prof. Joe Pace Asciak and his wife Marion, who are well-known lecturers. They have a great love of Italy, and the Italian language, and spent many years there mastering the language. They love Italian and they are very keen to teach it at different levels, specialising in many language registers. In their presentation they will show us how relevant the role of literature can be in teaching a foreign language. Their experience ranges from teaching in secondary schools to lecturing at University, both in Malta and in other countries.
After taking his degree in Malta, Professor Joseph Pace Asciak obtained a doctorate at Università degli Studi di Firenze in 1979. He is now a full professor of Italian Language and Literature at the University of Malta and has presented papers in conferences and lectured in many countries.
Marion lectures with Joe in Italy and is a retired Deputy-Principal at St. Aloysius Sixth Form and Director of the Department of Italian for Catholic Schools in Malta. Together they share a passion and enthusiasm for teaching Italian in very creative and interactive ways. To this end, they have individually and together produced several textbooks for Italian learners.
