Bartholomew, sports attorney, lives on gimmicks and little tricks. Over the years he has wasted the many opportunities he has had, the vice of gambling has made him lose money and family and now he spends his days in the suburbs hoping to find the new Maradona. Always looking for a stroke of luck, one day he receives a phone call: in Uruguay there is a young boy, Pablito, who is a real phenomenon…
REGIONAL NOTES:
Through the figure of Bartolomeo the film weaves stories of completely different characters, united by a sport, football, sometimes capable of breaking down all political and cultural barriers. But also football has its dark side. In fact, the story has nothing to do with the bright lights of the great champions, but goes to explore the undergrowth, the lower categories, the footballers not yet teenagers. Bartolomeo takes care of this, of a “market” of small future promises to be discovered and resold at all costs to the highest bidder, like any other object. A market that has many shadows and few lights, an economy in the hands of unscrupulous people who decide the fate of the lives of thousands of footballers little more than children, especially foreigners, coming from difficult realities and often lost in the impact with a new reality far from theirs. Bartolomeo lives alone, has gambling debts and lives from day to day, always in search of the deal that will change his life, no matter if to do so he has to snatch children from underprivileged families who can not give up the money he offers for the power of attorney.
Before making the film I did a lot of research, through a series of interviews with real prosecutors, and our story is similar to that of many children who emigrated in search of fortune, which in most cases ends with the abandonment of guardians and the clandestinity. Also the incredible meeting with Ramiro Garcia, who played the role of Pablito in a very brilliant way, gave confirmation to my research. Football as a dream, life as an obstacle, the relationship between the difficult reality of Bartolomeo, which is intertwined with another complicated overseas affair, that of little Pablito, his country of origin and his family. The film gave me the opportunity to talk about very topical and thorny issues. Bartolomeo goes to Uruguay, a country that has a strong Italian imprint in its origin and there, besides Pablito, he meets his old friend Bruno who, although Italian, lives almost like an illegal immigrant trying to survive among a thousand difficulties. I have lived for years in South America and I have met many people like Bruno, especially during the economic crisis of 2009. On the other hand, Pablito doesn’t come to Italy with barges, but trying to follow the popular dream of the masses to become a football champion, but once that dream is over, his exploiters are ready to put it aside or even worse to sacrifice it. Unfortunately a common story to those many who, without the dream of becoming footballers, are forced to abandon their land in search of fortune, just like our Pablito.
