Have you ever heard of Aloe Vera? It is a medicinal plant belonging to the Aloaceae family. It has fleshy leaves, which contain a gel with extraordinary properties: Aloe Vera is anticancer, healing, detoxifying, it is of great help to skin and hair.

The oldest account of the medicinal use of Aloe Vera dates back to approximately 65 AD, when Dioscorides, a Greek physician in the Roman army, who is considered the father of pharmacology, mentioned it in his De Materia Medica. From this work we learn that Aloe Vera was already widespread in many areas of the Mediterranean and Africa, but that it probably originated in the Arabian Peninsula.

Our guest, Dr Pasquale Palazzo, a pharmacist, is of Lucanian origin, but lives in Smerillo, in the Italian region called Marche. He pioneered the studies on Aloe Vera and its introduction in Italy, which began in 1990. It all started from a meeting between the pharmacist and an American doctor whose origins were linked to the ancient Sioux tribe.

This American doctor had observed that the American Indians used Aloe Vera for many different purposes. “Aloe Vera is not a miracle medicine, but it can play a role in helping the immune system so that the body, Dr Palazzo says, reacts better to illness.”

Dr Palazzo is the owner and founder of San Ruffino Lab and San Ruffino Cosmetics.
