MUSIC | “This is my radio / My radio star”. Vasco Rossi: dalla radio allo stadio

A public talk by Dr. Irene Incarico (Senior Visiting Lecturer - University of Malta)

The controversial figure of Vasco “Blasco” Rossi has travelled across the last 40 years of Italy’s history of music, from the “free radios” era up till the contemporary music digital platforms. The rockstar from Zocca, a small town in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, a self-proclamed provocautore (a pun between the words provocatore and autore, meaning “provocative author”), has explored the multifaceted aspects of the musical scene and its languages, moving from an early disc jockey experience to the publishing of books, DVDs and OSTs, while releasing more than 250 original songs. His distinctive lyrics have become anthems of several young generations and have legitimized a new linguistic approach to the Italian songwriting tradition.

Irene Incarico (La Spezia, 1981) earned her Ph.D. in Italian Studies from the University of Trieste. She also holds a 4-year laurea in Italian Studies from the University of Pisa, with a specialization in Italian Philology. She is Visiting Senior Lecturer in the Department of Italian of the University of Malta, where she teaches study-units ranging from medieval literature to social history of pop music from the postwar period to the present day. She is also International Students and Programme Leader at Chiswick House School (Malta), where she teaches French. She published articles on science fiction, Emilio Salgàri, and Stephen King. She co-authored a ‘cybergoth’ novel, and authored several science fiction and horror short stories. She also co-edited with Alice Favaro the book Eurofumetto & globalizzazione: Studi su graphic novel e linguaggi dei comics (La Spezia: Cut-Up Publishing, 2018).
