ART | SCIENCE | CARAVAGGIO AND MATTIA PRETI IN MALTA. SCIENCE IN AID OF ART: THE MALTESE GLOBIGERINE FOR THE DATING OF THE PAINTINGS

A talk by Sante Guido e Giuseppe Mantella

One of the most difficulties in the historical artistic research is the correct dating of the works made by the artists in the absence of evidence archival documents or sources of different nature.

Some scientific applications from some decades help in part to better investigate the nature and genesis of a work of art. Investigations with infrared light, ultraviolet light, X-ray radiographs, laser beam surveys facilitate the study of a painting or a sculpture.

They are "non-destructive" tests as they do not require material extraction; next to these, however, some "destructive" investigations are often necessary, in other words requiring very small samples of material to be investigated with increasingly sophisticated microscopes.

This is what happened in some paintings by Caravaggio but also by Mattia Preti in which the globigerine powder was specifically researched to demonstrate the dating to the Maltese period of dozens of paintings by the famous Calabrian painter.
