The Italian Design Day in the World is an initiative of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation that is aimed at highlighting the excellence and peculiarities of Italian design. Italian Embassies and Italian Cultural Institutes around the world organize events to promote and celebrate Italian contemporary design.

The theme for the Italian Design Day 2019 edition is “Design and the City of Future, with the objective to demonstrate how design can be applied to a complex product as the contemporary city, reaching to new and sustainable solution of the environmental and cultural resources(i.e. in the field of construction, cars, biomedical…).

To mark this special occasion, the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta and the Embassy of Italy in Malta, in collaboration with Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) are organizing “CARS, DESIGN AND THE CITY OF THE FUTURE” an initiative dedicated to Italian car brands, design, automobile industry and transportation in the near future.

Michael Vernon Robinson is the Italian design testimonial chosen for Malta by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for this year’s edition of the Italian Design Day. Robinson is Founder & Principal of One-Off Design Studio (Turin).  He is a multifaceted, highly creative designer and a well-known futurist, with a thirst for advanced research. His design teams have produced many provocative automobiles, yachts, helicopters, trains, etc. In 2011 he was inducted into the Italian National Car Design Hall of Fame in Turin, Italy. He was Design Director at Lancia, Fiat, Bertone and ED Design.

Dr. Malcolm Caligari Conti graduated as a mechanical engineer from the University of Malta in 2011. He then went on to read for a Ph.D. in Biomaterials engineering at the University of Malta. His continuing love of cars propelled him into a lecturing position at MCAST. Malcolm is a forward thinking individual who embraces development whilst appreciating the lessons learnt from the past.

The event on 20 March 2019 at 18:30 at the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta is open to the public free admission but reservation is required on segreteria.iiclavalletta@esteri.it . The event consists of the presentations:

· Italian Car Design 2030. A talk by Michael Vernon Robinson where he illustrates how in a world of rapid changes, beauty is no longer sufficient for Italian car design. The automobile is being transformed into a concept of sustainable mobility, offering a higher quality of life in tomorrow’s society.

· The Car in the City of the Future. A talk by Dr Malcolm Caligari Conti on the theme of mobility in the cities of the future.

· The screening of “Driving dreams” a docu-film by Gianluca Migliarotti. The docufilm is dedicated to the men who conceived some of the most remarkable and visionary car designs of the 20th Century. The designers of an era that many call the Italian Automotive Renaissance. A series of interviews of leading men in the field accompanied with stellar imagery of their projects and cars.

A FIAT 500A Topolino (1936), a FIAT 500C Belvedere (1952), an Alfa Romeo Spider (1975), courtesy of Mr Richard Zahra and Mr Carlo Zampa and an Alfa Romeo Giulia (2018) courtesy of Motors Inc. will be on display on St. George’s Square, right in front of the Italian Cultural Institute.
